Mancini seems to think we need players. That our current crop aren't good enough to better last seasons efforts after our two closest rivals have strengthened. I can see where he is coming from because as much as i hate to say it, Kagawa will be a fantastic signing for them both financially and through the options he will give them on the pitch as he is a completely different dimension of player to anything they've had in the last 7-8 years. I am slightly less worried about Chelsea because although have added 2 of the most talented young players about at the moment i do think that the clear change in philosophy they are going to have to have, will prove just as troublesome to their league season as it did in the one just past. It will take time to gel and strength of character from Abramovich to stick with it, something we all know he hasn't been famous for in the past.
Marwood, I'm absolutely convinced is acting on orders from Khaldoon that the times of Mansour funding the club are over, that the club has to become self sustainable and not necessarily to just to adhere to FFP but because the influx of finance via new sponsorships, partnerships, added commercial revenue and the prize monies for winning the league over the next 12 months will enable us to go big next summer if Mancini sees fit. If Marwood wasn't acting under the orders of the higher-ups, we would have seen something change in strategy by now, surely?
There has been litterings on twitter that Marwood isn't good enough at his job, that others in his position wouldn't be struggling at all to move RSC, Bridge and Ade on a full time basis, something of which a fair few frustrated blues seem to believe to be true. A fair few stating that he showed his incompetency in letting Wiess go for a lowly £1.4 million. On the other hand journos have suggested that having been spoilt for riches and selecting from a list of 99% of the worlds greatest footballers to sign during his reign at City, that Mancini perhaps may have gotten a little skewed vision on financial reality and as a result isn't willing to compromise by signing more youthful, cheaper targets and then nurture them to the players he wants, that he only sees it as De Rossi or the high way. A couple of others have suggested rumours that he happily proposed a Plan B in Fernando Gago only for Marwood to deem that the wages he was demanding (they say/tweet around the 60-70k p/w) where disproportionate to his previous 2-3 seasons performances whilst being loaned out by Madrid and this is why Mancini cuts such a frustrated figure when asked about potential signings/transfer inactivity.
Personally i don't know what to make of it. We don't know the figures but there is obviously a more powerful voice behind Marwood otherwise he wouldn't have managed to maintain such a strong stance/position on transfers. To not be able to participate in this years CL would mean a huge loss in revenue for the club and if adding another 160k p/w wage without first ridding ourselves of 160k p/w in current wages would put our fate anywhere near the hands of Micheal Platini and his minions then i most certainly side with Marwood.
But at the same time, if the squad is to remain, we face this seasons problems again next season; Yaya, Kolo and, after his first call up, possibly Abdul Razak missing mid-season for the ACN, leaving us not only lacking in an adequate replacement in the engine room but also left with a fatigued and tired player when Yaya and the others return. The same problems will remain about only being able to register 22 players for the 25-man CL squad, a number that will be cut to 20 during the ACN. In my mind, and probably Mancini's too, there is no doubt that our season will suffer if that is going to be the case.
So without seeing any figures I'm torn between the two. I just feel that the attention, the spotlight is on us and that the world is on the precipice, ready to jump on the bandwagon, ready to cement us into the global market and start to raking in those $$$'s, IF we can follow up that one great success with another straight after... Or is this just a symptom of the accelerated rise we've been gifted, that Marwood is right and that in time we'll be able to take that next step off of our own doing?
