We were all baffled when Jim Cassell was moved out of managing the academy (a job he'd done tremendously for 15 years) to be involved in world-wide youth recruitment. Since that move was made 3 years ago the performances of the youth team haven't coincided with the increase in talent available, in fact they've got worse.
We've finished the NextGen Tournament without a win or even a point. When you bare in mind that the under 19's didn't get entered into the league this season due to playing in the next gen tournament, is Andy Welsh doing a good enough job? From the sound of things being repeatedly said, the teams we are coming up against look a far better unit, more mature and much more of a team. I don't know whether this is down to poor management or whether we need to be starting to get players from all over the world in at 12-13 and not at 16-17 but either way i think it's about time that we brought Jim Cassell back into the youth fold back at the club.

i remember being slightly clueless when cassell was whisked away, but i don't know enough about the coaching system of the youth teams to demand welsh be let go. although the next gen series has been ridiculously disappointing (5 losses from 5), and it was really stupid to not enter the reserve league, we have to admit that youth football is not about winning. it's about developing players with the skills and attributes they'll need in their (hopefully) long football careers. i'd far rather our youth teams lost matches playing good football than win every game playing hoof and hope... what does that teach them? i will admit however that if what eaststand says about the players not looking like a team is true, then that's very worrying. on the plus side, our under 18s are sitting pretty at the top of their league at present, with 22 points from 10 games. utd are 4th from bottom. www.premierleague.com/page/YouthCTable

also, with regards to our next gen series results, haven't a lot of our young players (who would have played in it) been out on loan recently?

i think they've been loaned as a result of us not progressing in the tournament

Jim Casell was fine, as an administrator of the Academy, BUT, come on guys - the big loss to us was Alex Gibson - HE is the guy who was the playing coach of our Youth Cup winning side and he was moved with Cassell to God knows where. Overall I'd agree that our younger teams have definitely gone backwards

It's been a blow losing Eyre as well, the entire team has moved on, even if two of them are still employed by the club. Maybe it's time to start a bit of a poaching mission, get the perceived best of the best in coaching staff-wise?
